We have been running  The Dog Whispering Play Group every Wednesday from 12 PM - 2 PM for several months now with great success.  Every week we work with dog owners and their dogs to help owners become better pack leaders and dogs become happy and more confident.  We have introduced many dogs to the group that have been fearful, shy and dominant and created a happy balanced pack of dogs.  We enjoy the important role we play, but it is a few special dogs that create many of the miracles we see.

Dog Behavioral Training Tip of the Day
Finish!  In the dog world, you are what you get.  When you ask for a behavior change, follow through until you get the behavior to stop and your dog to give you calm and respectful attention.  If you do not stop addressing a behavior that you disagree with until you get this result.  Your dog will get faster and faster at achieving this ideal state of mind when you intervene in his/her activities!

Dublin’s Rescue: Small Dog, Big Heart!
Animal Control was called to an abandoned trailer. The house was worse than the pictures that we have can portray. They opened the door, pushing feces back, about 5-6 inches deep in many places. Dublin was born in that house, in that mess. They estimated that he was 5 months old when they rescued him. They said the house was clearly abandoned and in a populated area but nobody ever wanted to get involved. The adult dogs in the home were quite old. Captain was the male, and very dominant. He never let Dublin anywhere near the group. Any time he tried to approach the group, he was attacked. Throughout all the time the dogs were in their care Dublin was always the outcast.  Dublin was the last to be found.

Originally they thought it was just Captain, the mom and one female baby. Then they found the 2nd female baby. At that time they thought that was it and almost left. They heard a noise and went to a back bedroom, clearly a boy’s room, and found a broken down dresser. In that dresser and curled up on a pile of feces was Dublin.

None of the dogs were friendly and they were all scared. To catch the dogs, the rescue team opened crate doors and put food in them...all but Dublin eventually went in on their own. One of the rescuers tried and tried to catch Dublin without having to use the catch pole but it was impossible. She did have to use it and says she will never forget the look in Dublin's eyes after she caught him. She let go of the pole as to try and not make it worse than it already was.

Back at their rescue building they tried to do the best for the 'family'. Socialization was obviously an issue. Captain had to be put down due to temperament. The "mom" was also put down but due to many health issues she had. She was not in good shape. One of the other babies was found to have a twisted stomach and did not make it.

Dublin has been in the care of Your Dog’s Best Friend for over a month. His fearful demeanor has slowly given way to a curious and happy puppy. Although still hesitant around new people, the intense fear and flight tendencies are gone. He is getting faster and faster at warming up to new people. He has found a forever home with a little maltese brother that he joined last Wednesday.  Support dogs like Dublin and click the Small Dog Rescue of MN button below.  Follow Dublin's story on Facebook.
